Abstract :

The research explores the drivers of adoption of irrigation technology among 6.008 small-scale banana farmers considering gender. The study utilizes data from the 2019/2020 National Sample Census on Agriculture in Tanzania and employs the Double-Hurdle Model in the analysis. The study found that female-headed households are less likely to adopt irrigation, with factors like farm size, mixed cropping, and limited literacy reducing adoption, while access to irrigation schemes, modern homes, literacy, and agroecological zones positively influence adoption. The study recommends to implement gender-sensitive agricultural programs that provide female-headed households with access to irrigation technologies, financial resources, and extension services. Keywords: Gender, small-scale banana farming, irrigation technology adoption, Tanzania, double-hurdle model
